Projekt Meuchelmoerder – Creating believable character assets
This bachelor’s thesis examines the conception, creation, and technical realization of a believable 3D character asset for real-time environments. Focusing on character art for games and cinematic production, the project combines theoretical research with a practice-based workflow to explore how believability can be achieved through design, historical reference, and technical execution. Drawing inspiration from the Thirty Years’ War as a historical framework, the thesis investigates the role of clothing, functionality, and visual storytelling in character design, emphasizing plausibility over strict historical accuracy.
In the practical part, this thesis documents the development of a character from the concepting stage to a 3d character asset, while using industry standard tools and pipelines. Additionally, contemporary videogames are analysed to inform design strategies for the workflow. Insights from professional character and concept artists further inform the project’s methodology.
The thesis aims to provide aspiring artists with an accessible overview of professional character art workflows while demonstrating how artistic intent, technical constraints, and historical inspiration can be balanced to create compelling and believable characters for real-time production.
